“Edition wissenschaftliche Software”: RWTH Aachen University Receives Millions in Funding for a Pioneering Project on Software History

Together with colleagues from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Bielefeld University and the Research Institute for Technology and the History of Science at Deutsches Museum, Gabriele Gramelsberger, director of the KHK c:o/re and Chair of Philosophy of Science and Technology at RWTH Aachen University, coordinates the pioneering project “Edition wissenschaftliche Software. Wissenschaftshistorische und wissenschaftsphilosophische Forschung und Edition zur Softwaregeschichte der Digitalen Wissenschaften von 1950 bis 2010“ (Scientific Software: Research and publication on the history and philosophy of science, focusing on the history of software in the digital sciences from 1950 to 2010.) that just started this year.

At RWTH Aachen University, KHK c:o/re alumni fellow Ricky Wichum takes over project management. The project’s goal is to systematically index, evaluate, and edit the remaining scientific software from the years 1950 to 2010. In addition, a new research line on the software history of digital science is going to be established. On top of that, an open online research platform with new standards for digital archiving is being created.

This project is part of the Academies’ Program, the joint research program of the German science academies. The total funding for the new projects amounts to around 42 million euros, with terms ranging from 15 to 25 years.
